Speech Analysis Instructions and Assignment
Nothing exists in a bubble not time, not action, not history/math/science, and certainly not speeches. We think of speeches in soundbites I have a dream. . . Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country! Give me liberty or give me death! Four score and 7 years ago. . . and we can go on and on. It is critical that we understand why these words were uttered by who and for what reason. The list I have compiled is by no means exhaustive but scratches the surface of some of the more important and/or popular speeches of our recent history.
To write a critical analysis of a speech, research the issues addressed in the speech and gain biographical and other background information about the speaker. Write a summary of your conclusions to finish the critical analysis. You have the choice of 1 of the 11 speeches below (1 speech per analysis). Please use a different speech from this list for each analysis.
Analysis should be a minimum of 500 words, typed, Times New Roman 12 pt font, double spaced (with no added spacing between paragraphs) with 1-inch margins. Please use MLA or APA citation.
The 1st half of the analysis should look at the following:
Source a copy of the speech
In order to analyze the speech, you must have a copy of it to refer to as you write. I have included links below to the speeches I would like you to use.
Research the central issue addressed
Before you analyze the speech, you must have a good working knowledge of the issue or issues addressed. Research the issues as well as the evidence offered so that you understand the speakers stance as well as where she found her evidence.
Get to know the speaker
Learning details about the speaker’s biography, such as education and work history, for example, help explain his relationship to the issues he raises, his choice of evidence, rhetorical style and so on.
The 2nd half of the analysis should be the following:
Examine the speech critically
Use your study and research to write an informed opinion of the speech. Do you believe that this speech should remain in the CSCCs top 50 speeches given since 1925, and why or why not? How well and in what ways has the speaker made her/his point? How balanced is the presentation of the issues under discussion? How trustworthy is the quality of evidence and what kinds are used
