For this assignment, you are to pick one image, one color, and one dialogue passage in The Great Gatsby, analyzing them and relating them to a larger reading of the novel. While Fitzgerald’s technique is not experimental in the way Stein’s writing is, it nevertheless carefully positions various elements in ways that develop the novel’s themes. Identify your chosen image, color, and dialogue and analyze each individually and in relation to each other. Then discuss them in the context of one or more of the novel’s larger themes. The essay must be at least five pages, typed, double-spaced, and submitted as a Word document.
It is imperative that you push below the surface of the text into its deeper dimensions. Allow yourself to play in the language, letting it lead you to startling insights and realizations.
While this is not a formal paper, this essay does need to have an introduction, body, and conclusion. Feel free to be creative in your approach, but do not forget to follow the rules of grammar and spelling (if you present a sentence fragment as a sentence, make sure it is for truly good reason). The grade (0-100) will be based on depth of insight, creativity of approach, and effective presentation, including grammar and spelling.
