Write a discussion paper on the Public SpeakingThe textbook talks about organizing the ideas of your speeches in one of 5 possible organizational patterns: Chronological (following a time pattern), Spatial (following a directional pattern), Causal Order (showing a cause and effect), Problem-Solution, and Topical.
It is possible to take the same speech topic and organize it in any of the 5 options.
For example let’s say I’m doing a speech about photographer, Gordon Parks. My three main points are:
I. As a photographer
II. Parks as a Civil Rights activist
III. Parks as a film writer
My speech is organized in Topical Order.
However, could I take this same speech and organize in Chronological order? Could I put it in Spatial order? How? Causal order? Problem-solution? How?
If you answered “yes” that I can in fact put that speech into each of those other organizational patterns, you are absolutely correct. To put it into Chronological order, I simply talk about what Parks did first, then second, then third. To put this speech in Spatial order, I would organize the description of one of his works. For Causal order, I could discuss what cause or inspired Parks to use different forms of artistic expression. Finally, I could put the topic into Problem-solution order when I learned how he used his artistry and skill to address and tackle social and civil wrongs in the United States.

Mrs. Edwards’ example:
1) Chronological Order: Gordon Parks’ career as a photographer touched on various aspects of urban, American life from the 1940’s to the 2000s.
2) Topical Order: In his career, Gordon Parks highlighted various aspects of African American life that spanned from the Tuskegee Airmen, to the Grease Plant workers, to the segregation of the South.
3) Causal Order: Gordon Parks used his camera as a tool to spotlight the evils of poverty, racism, and social wrongs.
