“The Inheritance.” This is an excellent documentary about the labor movement in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries (and is therefore relevant to our Chapter 14 on Labor Relations). You may be surprised by the documentary’s portrayal of what it was like to live and work in the United States in the early 1900s. Although the video is 57 minutes, if you watch up to about the 40 minute mark, that should be sufficient to get a good sense of the portion of the content that is relevant for this discussion.
Due to the need for you to invest a little bit of time on the front end watching the video, the timeline for posting will be a little bit different this week. You need to post just twice rather than three times. Your first discussion post that you make here in response to the question below should be made by Sunday, August 21. Your second post, in response to someone else, should be made by Tuesday, August 23. (But the discussion is open for posting right now, so you may, of course, make your first post whenever you are ready!)
Watch and think about the video “The Inheritance” on the history of labor unions in the United States that is posted above. Then, in your first post, fully address BOTH of the bullet points below (at least one fully developed paragraph for each) in sufficient detail to show that you watched the video and gave thoughtful consideration to the messages in it.
Identify something specific you learned about U.S. labor unions in relation to this video. Summarize what the video said or conveyed about this topic.
Has your own opinion about the role of labor unions in relation to jobs and employment in the United States changed in any way as a result of watching the video? Why or why not?
