Begin Your Windshield Survey Paper
A Windshield Survey is an assessment that you will make of the community you currently live in. It can be a small community, a small town, or a larger city. You will be provided with a list of things that you must assess as you Walk or Drive through your community (Hence a Windshield Survey). This detailed survey gives the student a bigger picture of the community and a chance to identify problems recognized while driving through. You will develop a nursing diagnosis with possible resource agencies that can be utilized to help with the nursing diagnosis that you have developed. This assignment is not due until July 19th but it is wise to start early due to the amount of time involved in writing this paper. Most Windshield Surveys area about 10-15 pages. See step-by-step instructions, rubric, and video below:
Windshield Assessment Paper Instructions
This assignment is a community assessment utilizing the windshield assessment technique,
nursing diagnosis formulated, and a formal APA paper with headings for each category. Your
paper must have an introduction paragraph telling the reader the name and state that the
community is located and what you will be discussing in the paper.
Sections of the paper include: Windshield Assessment, Problems, Diagnosis, Objectives,
Rationale, 2 Different Resource Agencies related to your diagnosis, and Research articles
(See Windshield Assessment Rubric). As you assess each area, it is important to use
references to support your findings. These can be web-based references.
You will assess the community by using the questions asked on the Windshield Assessment
Rubric. This will be a formal paper and should follow strict APA guidelines. You will want to
gather information on each of the areas listed on the Windshield Assessment Rubric. You
must interview two different community resource agencies not just individuals in
person. These agencies must contribute in some way to the community diagnosis you have
developed in the community assessed.
In addition, you must find research articles that discuss a similar problem and intervention
to the nursing diagnosis you have developed for your community. The articles MUST be
discussed in your paper and on the reference list. Article must be attached as a separate
document when your final paper is submitted. The article must be
evidence based/a RESEARCH study of some type , not a “how to” article.
You must have a reference list with all references you have used in your paper including your
text, articles on the population group, community windshield assessment resources used, and any
governmental sites used for collection of data on this community. NOTE: Resource Agencies
MUST be visited in PERSON. In your paper, the Resource information must include the name
of person interviewed, phone number, address, information on the resources purpose, how it
functions, staff makeup (i.e. RN, social worker, secretary), and funding (Grant? United Way?
Private funding? State? Federal?). Interview a nurse or administrator if possible. A
receptionist or secretary is not an acceptable interview.
You will formulate two nursing diagnoses for the selected community and population group.
Remember, the diagnoses are for the community, not specific patients within the
community. Think of nursing diagnoses that will impact the health of the targeted population in
that community (ex. Risk of violence due to low socioeconomic conditions or Health
promotion/risk prevention for elders in a specified community area who attend a community
activity center). The diagnoses should be listed in order of priority. You may use your Nursing
Diagnosis book to help with finding an appropriate diagnosis. Your diagnosis must
include objectives and rationale.
The paper should be typewritten and no more than 10 pages in length (not including title page,
graphs, charts, or references). Use spell check, Grammarly.com or the USA Online writing lab to
check and double check for errors in punctuation and content. This paper should also be sent to
Turn it in before the due date.
