HISI Ethics Paper Instructions The focus of this case study is the Home Improvement Stores Industry, or HISI, and how the two market share leaders in that industry, Home Depot and Lowe’s, reacted to the COVID-19 pandemic. With pooled research and shared thoughts, you will write a paper that identifies ethical issues in the decision-making and leadership of the CEOs of the two companies and use ethical theory to decide which one of the two acted the least ethical during the first six months of the pandemic. You will also be able to identify the consequences of the decisions these CEOs made.
Things to looks out for-
1. Be very careful about the time frame you use for the
different segments of the paper. For example, Home
Depot has changed CEOs since the beginning of the
pandemic and we only care about Craig Menear’s
decisions and statements.
2. You need to be able to explain how come these two
companies were allowed to remain open while other
stores had to limit their operations or close
completely.
3. Pay attention to which company changed open
hours, implemented mask mandates, began to
implement alternative delivery methods, offered
increased benefits to their employees, and donated
products to essential institutions. One company
lagged behind the other for the first 12 months and it
is for you to find out which.
4. Which company had the most bad press during the
first year of the pandemic? What were the employees
saying about what was going on behind the scenes?
Did the companies enforce the mask policies they put
in place?
5. How were the CEOs rewarded for their efforts after
the first year of the pandemic as far as salaries and
increased power? Hint: Early in the semester, the
textbook discusses how the CEO is accountable to the
company’s Board. What ethical issues could arise if
the CEO becomes the Chairman of the Board?
