Step 1: Compose Questions
Compose a list of at least ten initial questions you plan to ask your subject.
Step 2: Interview Your Subject
After carefully crafting the initial interview questions, spend a minimum of one hour interviewing your profile subject. You might also break this up into two 30-minute interviews – the more interview data you get, the better.
Step 3: Attach “Raw” Interview Data
This part of the assignment requires you to share the “raw data” you collected during the interview. Remember, ideally this will be at least an hour’s worth of raw material collected *during* your interview, not constructed afterwards. Photographs you yourself have taken can be included as raw data.
If you collected audio of the interview, attach or link to the audio file(s).
If you recorded video, attach or link to the video file.
If you wrote in a notebook with a pen as you collected data, scan in those pages or provide screenshots of them.
If you typed notes on a laptop, attach that Word-accessible document.
Step 4: Synthesize Raw Data
Now that you have conducted an initial interview, spend time reflecting on what your interview data means. Compose a paragraph of at least 250 words explaining what you have learned from this data about the subject and the central takeaway, the story, at the heart of this profile. This paragraph should not simply restate your “raw” data in narrative form but should explain what significant ideas you learned and how they will inform your profile.
