Week 7 – Assignment: Conduct an Interview with an Adolescent
Instructions: We are going to do the Alternative Assignment
For this weeks assignment, please ask a friend or family member if they will allow you to interview them or their adolescent. The adolescent must be at least 18 years old.
Select a topic you wish to interview the adolescent about. For this assignment, keep the topic simple and not controversial (e.g., school-related instead of about sexuality). Here are some suggested topics.
1. School and the importance of studying and getting good grades
2. The benefits of engaging in sports or athletics
3. The benefits of pet ownership for children
You can also select a different topic of your choosing. Please be sure to get your Professors permission if you wish to select a different topic.
Come up with at least 3 main questions you want to ask your participant in your interview. You will use these as the anchor questions and then ask some different follow-up questions when you conduct the interview. The follow-up questions will be based on the responses you get from the main interview questions.
Arrange for about 20 to 30 minutes to conduct your interview with the adolescent. In person or over Skype where you can see the adolescents facial expressions will work best. Try to arrange for an environment free from distractions. Do not have a TV on, or other children playing nearby. If the parent(s) or guardian(s) wants to be present, ask them to sit out of the childs eyesight and remain quiet.
As you conduct your interview, be sure to accurately record responses. After the interview, prepare a summary of the process, including your questions and the adolescents answers. Indicate what kinds of follow-up questions you asked based on the adolescents initial responses.
Finally, in your summary, include your thoughts about the interview method with children or adolescents. Did you like this method? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using the interview technique with children or adolescents?
Alternative Assignment: If you are unable to locate an adolescent to interview, then please write a paper about the pros and cons of using the interview technique with children and adolescents. Include 3-5 scholarly sources.
Support your assignment with at least three scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included.
Length: 3-5 pages, not including title and reference pages. Be sure to include your interview questions as an appendix to your submission.
Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.
