Discussion: Roles and Responsibilities of a PhD Student and a Pre-Practicum Student Teacher
If you have not already noticed, you are fulfilling two major roles in this course. Your first role is that of a PhD student where you learn and grow in acquiring the knowledge and skills needed as a doctoral candidate. Your other role is that of a Pre-Practicum Student Teacher where you acquire the knowledge and skills in the practice of teaching MS students. These roles are not without their challenges. For example, a big part of your professional responsibility will be to communicate appropriately in each of these roles, and this can be quite a challenge. What might be some challenges you might face as a PhD student and as a Pre-Practicum Student Teacher?

As previously mentioned in this week’s introduction, you will co-teach and work closely with your MS faculty mentor in your assigned MS online classroom. You will monitor this classroom and provide feedback to your MS students based on the agreed upon responsibilities between you and your MS faculty mentor.

For this Discussion, you will explore the roles and responsibilities as both the PhD student as well as a Pre-Practicum Student Teacher to further your understanding of your professional identity as a counselor-educator. Specifically, you will complete a few assessments to consider your strengths and challenges in teaching and further explore what it means to be a counselor-educator.

To Prepare:

Access and review the MS Faculty Guidebook for Pre-Practicum and all materials in the MS course you are assigned to co-teach.
Complete the Professional Practice Assessment and the Cultural Competence Assessment in the Learning Resources and save your results. Consider your strengths and challenges in teaching.
Review the Professional Identity media program found in this week’s Learning Resources.
Review the Kaltura Uploader link found in the navigation of the classroom for helpful guidelines for creating and uploading your video for this Discussion. (Note: Please be mindful of the technical requirements needed when creating your video.)
Create a transcriipt (approximately 3–5 minutes) of your roles and responsibilities as a PhD student and an MS Pre-Practicum student teacher to guide you as you record your video. Your transcriipt should include answers for the following:
Your roles and responsibilities as both a CES student and as an MS Pre-Practicum student teacher.
Using your assessment information, discuss one area of strength as you begin your teaching experience, and one growth area that you would like to develop in your teaching practice and why.
Finally, share an insight about the meaning of being a counselor-educator that you gained from watching the Professional Identity media program.
Record your scriipted roles and responsibilities as a PhD student and MS Pre-Practicum student teacher and use the Kaltura video uploader to upload your video to this Discussion. You will also upload your transcriipt to the Discussion area.
By Day 5
Post and upload your Kaltura video and written transcriipt of yourself that provides an explanation of the following:

Your roles and responsibilities as both a CES student and as an MS Pre-Practicum student teacher.
Using your assessment information, discuss one area of strength as you begin your teaching experience and one growth area that you would like to develop in your teaching practice and why.
Finally, share an insight about the meaning of being a counselor-educator that you gained from watching the Professional Identity media program.
Note: Your role will be dependent on the faculty with whom you are working as well as general expectations.
