Common Sense pamplet
Thomas Paine wrote the pamphlet Common Sense to convince American colonists to support the idea of independence. You should now understand the relationship between political principles and the Declaration of Independence. Use the information you learned in the lesson to create your own modern day Common Sense pamphlet that explains how the Declaration of Independence upholds the principles of popular sovereignty, social contract, and natural and individual rights.

Steps
1. Use this Pamphlet Template(attached as a file)or a Web 2.0 tool to create your six-panel pamphlet.
There are many 21st century tools available for creating and submitting your work in the online environment. For more information on the tools your school uses, contact your teacher or visit the Web 2.0 tools area of your course.
2. The first panel should be the title panel. Include your name, date, instructor, and a title for the pamphlet.
3. On the second panel, write a one-paragraph overview of the Declaration of Independence. Be sure to describe its purpose and how the document is structured.
4. On panels three, four, and five, you will explain the principles of popular sovereignty, social contract, and natural and individual rights. Each panel should include a well-written paragraph that explains how the Declaration of Independence reflects a principle. Use at least one quote from the Declaration of Independence that illustrates the principle, for each of these panels (three quotes total). For example, if you chose to focus on the principle of popular sovereignty for panel three in your pamphlet, then that panel will include a quote from the Declaration of Independence that illustrates the principle of popular sovereignty and one well-written paragraph that explains how the Declaration of Independence reflects the principle of popular sovereignty.
5. On the final panel, write one paragraph to explain whether or not you think the Declaration of Independence upholds the political principles Americans value. To guide your evaluation, consider these questions. Does the Declaration of Independence reflect all the important principles you learned about in the lesson? Did the writers of the Declaration of Independence accomplish their goals? If you had been an American colonist, would you have supported the Declaration of Independence? Why or why not?

2.03 Assessment

Prominent American Federalists and Anti-Federalists wrote essays and gave speeches to support their positions. For this assessment, you will identify whether a quote is Federalist or Anti-Federalist and explain how the quote supports that position. You will also evaluate which perspective, Federalist or Anti-Federalist, presented a stronger argument.

Steps
1. Review the lesson to make sure you understand the main points of the Federalists and Anti-Federalists. Examine these quotes, which you will use in the assignment.
2. Choose one quote from the chart that reflects an Anti-Federalist viewpoint and one quote that reflects a Federalist viewpoint.
3. Use this template (attached as a file) to do your work. For each of your two chosen quotes, explain how the quote supports the Federalist or the Anti-Federalist perspective. Write in complete paragraphs.
4. Which viewpoint, Federalist or Anti-Federalist, makes the better argument? Pick one of the quotes from the list, or one of the quotes you have already chosen, to help explain your choice. In a well-written paragraph, explain your response to this question.
5. Check your work before submitting. You should submit your work that contains the following:

You learned in the lesson that the Constitution protects individual rights that affect most citizens’ daily lives. You also learned that the government must balance the rights and needs of individuals with the needs of the public. Limitations to individual rights are most obvious during a time of crisis.

Imagine your area is in a state of emergency and you are concerned about the balance of liberty and security as people try to return to their normal lives, recover what was lost, and rebuild what was destroyed. Compose an email you could send to elected officials to voice your concerns. Your email should include positions on two of the potential issues related to civil liberties found below.

Steps
1. Use this Template (attached as file) for your email. Write an introductory paragraph for your email that explains why rights are not absolute. Include how the Constitution safeguards and limits individual rights.
2. Imagine that the following situations have occurred in your community following the disaster. Select two of the following situations to address and evaluate in your email:
-The government suspended the right of habeas corpus (the right to see a judge after arrest to determine if imprisonment is lawful).
-The government forced people to evacuate from their homes.
-The press accessed the disaster area and published a story in a national newspaper about the event.
-The government allowed federal and state troops to be quartered in private residences to assist residents and protect order.
-Citizens were denied the right to bring legally owned firearms to storm shelters.
-The government made certain dangerous areas off-limits, which prevented residents from accessing their homes and personal property.
-Prisoners were kept in prisons that lacked power, supplies, and plumbing during the emergency.
-The federal and state courts postponed scheduled criminal and civil trials due to the emergency.
-The government prevented the press from publishing graphic photos of victims of the natural disaster to protect the privacy of the victim’s family.
-The federal government stated that local and state governments are solely responsible for the disaster recovery efforts and that it will not be providing assistance.
3. Once you have chosen the concerns you wish to address, compose a well-written response to each situation with the following information:

Now that you are familiar with monitoring and analyzing public policy, it’s your turn. You will write a public policy analysis about a Florida issue that interests you.

Steps
1. Research a current public policy in Florida, either recently enacted or under consideration. These Resources (attached as file) will help you begin your work. The list below provides examples of popular local and state public policy topics that may help you narrow your search:

* affordable housing
* care of the elderly or disabled
* crime
* homelessness
* infrastructure
* property taxes
* school safety

1. *All of these issues are also national in scope. However, for this assignment your task is to focus specifically on a policy at the state level—Florida laws enacted or being debated by the Florida legislature.
2. Use this Policy Analysis Template (attached as file) to write a public policy analysis. Be sure to include the following:
* an explanation of the public policy idea, including text from the bill itself
* the costs and benefits of the policy idea for different groups of people
* your recommendation on the policy idea
* reasons for and evidence to support your recommendation

You’ve been asked by a popular news organization to create an article for their official website that will help the public understand the role that media plays in politics. Your product will first explain your analysis of a media item and then describe how the role of media in politics has changed over time.

Steps
1. Choose a visual, text, or other media item that is political in nature. This List (attached as file)provides some examples of media items and guidance on where to locate them on the internet. Be sure to include the media item, or directions on how to access it, with your assessment.
2. What is the political message of your chosen media item? In one well-written paragraph, answer this question by explaining the background of the text, image, or video. This background paragraph should include who created the media item, when, for whom, and for what purpose.
3. What bias exists in your media item? In a second well-written paragraph, explain what bias the message reveals and how. This analysis paragraph should explain at least one strategy from the lesson that the media item uses to persuade people, such as symbolism or emotional appeal.
4. How have the media changed over time, and how has this affected political communication? In a third well-written paragraph, answer this question in your own words.

You should now be familiar with how appointed judges compare to elected officials and the role of judicial review in U.S. government. Use this knowledge and content from the lesson to answer a series of questions. Then, analyze how the U.S Supreme Court used judicial review in a recent decision.

Steps
1. Answer the following questions in complete sentences:
* How is the role of an appointed judge in government different from an elected official?
* How is the role of an appointed judge in government similar to that of an elected official?

Now that you are familiar with legislation and court decisions that have expanded civil rights, a local museum needs your help to create a small exhibit for the museum. Your exhibit will highlight how legislation and court decisions have impacted the exercise of civil rights in the United States, and why these changes are significant. The exhibit should include expository writing, with the purpose of informing, describing, and explaining.
