A Comparative Analysis of a Social Problem
Objective:
In this project, you are expected to compare and contrast an existing SOCIAL problem in any TWO countries in the world.
Remember, it should be a problem in these two countries!!
Note:
Select an issue that is specific (such as honor killing, wage gap, or, conservation of wildlife). Issues such as women’s rights, gender inequality or environmental issues are too broad.
These are just a few examples. Feel free to write on a social issue that you are interested in.
Questions to address
Your paper should include the following sections. Consider the following questions while writing each section below.
a) How pervasive is this problem in each country? (present and describe relevant data you can cite some numbers in last 5-10 years). You can make a table, but the table will not count toward the word limit.
b) Explain only TWO most important factors that account for this problem in EACH country? (globalization, migration, state policies, political and/or economic context of the region, patriarchy etc. or any other that have been mentioned in the scholarly sources). In your conclusion, compare and contrast how the reasons for this issue are similar or different in the two countries.
Structure of the paper
The paper should have the following sections.
1. Introduction
Offer context of this problem in these two countries followed by discussion on data showing prevalence or magnitude of the problem.
2. Reasons for the issue
This section should describe two main reasons for this issue in this country (two reasons for county 1 and two reasons for country 2).
3. Conclusion
Adopt a critical angle while comparing and contrasting the reasons for this social issue in these countries.
Make sure to highlight any country specific or unique factors that contribute to this issue in that specific country.
Sources
Your bibliography should have at least four sources and a total of 6-8 sources.
You are required to make use of at least FOUR scholarly sources (at TWO on each country). Choose your resources wisely. They should offer relevant discussion on reasons for this issue in each country (see the section on ‘what is a scholarly source?’ for details).
In addition to four scholarly sources, you can use other non-scholarly sources (websites/ reports from as United Nations, International Monetary Fund, World Health organization etc.) or well-reputed newspaper sources/magazines.
What is a scholarly source?
A source that is peer reviewed or published in a recognized scholarly source, like a journal or a university publisher. It can be a book or an article. Such articles or books target specific audience, typically people in specializing in a particular field. Considering the scope of the paper, government documents or publications from well-established global organizations will count as scholarly source too.
Important:
You do not need to attach copies of your four articles to your papers. Be certain, however, do provide full citations (both intext and bibliography).
What is NOT a scholarly source?
Textbooks are not considered a scholarly source.
Wikipedia, Encyclopedias, and other online articles intended for general public. If you are not sure whether the book or the article you have chosen is scholarly or not, ask the instructor.
Format
The paper should be 1000-1200 words. (EXCLUDING bibliography, charts, tables etc.). Mention word limit at the end of the paper.
The paper should have 1″ margins all around.
The type font should be Times New Roman, size 12.
