Due Date: no later than Thursday, Apr. 7 @ 23:59pm
Length: 1500 to 1800 words—so about 4- 5 well-developed body paragraphs (plus your introduction and conclusion)
Research and Documentation: Your sources will include TWO or THREE newspaper or website articles which will function as your PRIMARY sources (the samples of coverage that you actually evaluate). Other sources should help you in the analysis by verifying information, giving you historical or contextual information, etc. You should cite at least 5 sources other than the articles that work as your illustrations. Keep in mind that you may need to look at 10 or more sources to find 5 that you actually use.
These sources will be documented in a Works Cited list which will follow the essay. Use current APA format throughout the essay.
Topic:
Choose a specific, recent (Jan 2022 onwards) event that interests you, and examine how 2 or 3 different news sources cover the event. Choose your news sources with the event in mind. Do you want an international comparison, a local comparison, etc.? We will discuss some key subject areas in-class to create a short list of subjects.
In all cases, work inductively as much as possible. Begin with your sample articles, and look for patterns and points of comparison or contrast.
Be sure to choose a focus that interests YOU. You need to spend a fair amount of time on this assignment and must be able to stick with it.
Analyzing
Media Coverage: Where to Start
1.
Examine the actual facts, content.
Does the article
contain different or contradictory pieces of information?
Secondary sources (reference
and other news sources) can help verify facts.
2.
Examine the emphasis in the article. The “facts” may be correct, but the emphasis
may be misplaced or inappropriate.
How early in the
article does a particular piece or type of information appear? How
much space is devoted to what bit of information? To what does the headline
draw our attention? How is word choice
affecting emphasis?
3.
Consider the sources in the article.
Where does the
information in the article come from?
Are these authorities/sources fair, reasonable? Does the article present a suitable range of
sources (appropriate to the story)? What kind of information is directly quoted?
What purposes do the quotations serve?
4.
Consider the context the article provides.
What does the article
seem to assume about the reader’s knowledge, presumptions, biases, or concerns? Does the article present enough background/context
to make the story relevant, meaningful?
Ultimately, how is
your understanding of the event/story shaped by the article you read? Consider both elements of form (language,
structure) and content. Your essay
should do more than describe or outline the similarities and differences: it should also attempt to explain why the
differences might exist.
