Explain how the theme relates to the novel as a whole (or in other words, how is the author using that character to illuminate the theme or make a statement about society?)

Words: 308
Pages: 2
Subject: Uncategorized

choose ONE theme from the list below and thoughtfully analyze how ONE particular character in a work responds/reacts to/or is affected by that theme. Then you will explain how the theme relates to the novel as a whole (or in other words, how is the author using that character to illuminate the theme or make a statement about society?) You will then find ONE critical article that relates to your topic as support for your argument.
Requirements:
Paper should be typed, MLA format with a WORKS CITED PAGE and IN TEXT CITATIONS (both critical article AND the work you are writing about should be cited in the paper and on the works cited page).
Paper should be 3-4 pages in length
Use ONE critical article from JSTOR or GALE Literary Sources and incorporate into your argument. You may use the criticism anywhere in the body of your paper, but you must cite it more than once.
Provide textual evidence from both your chosen work AND your critical article with correct in-text citations.
Provide a Works Cited page at the end of your paper for your sources
Paper must have a full introduction that introduces the work and author, as well as introducing your character and theme. (Critical article will NOT be a part of intro)
Thesis statement should present a defensible argument having to do with your character and theme.
You may include as many body paragraphs as you need.
You must have a full concluding paragraph.

Example Thesis: on the theme of Beauty, my thesis might read:
In FFMC, Bathshebas beauty is both a blessing and a curse. Hardy uses Bathshebas character to illuminate the injustices that existed for beautiful women in Victorian Society.
Or
In FFMC, while Boldwoods social class affords him opportunities and power other men didnt have, it also has its limits; Hardy uses Boldwoods character to demonstrate that even the wealthy cannot always hope for happiness or satisfaction in life.

Tips:
1.Please notice that my thesis statement answers both parts of the prompt
2. Do not merely summarize the text
4. When incorporating your critical article, make sure you introduce the title and author (think synthesis essay from last year). Ex. David Anderson has a similar opinion on gender in Poisonwood Bible. In his article Orleannas Role as a Ministers Wife, he states
5. You may find that you want to write about how one theme intersects with another. For example, in Hamlet, it may be necessary/more interesting to talk about death and social class or death and belief. This is okay and acceptable.
