The critical application paper in this class will be a movie or TV series review in which you will
describe aspects of stress and coping depicted in a film/series using theory and research
discussed in this course. You will incorporate a movie/series of your choice—you do not have
to receive my approval for your movie/series choice. You will need to choose a film or TV series
that deals with one of the content areas (e.g. Families with Special Needs, LGBQ parents,
Immigration, Racism & Discrimination, Intimate Partner Violence, Physical Illness, Substance
Abuse, Mental Health, Child Maltreatment, Death and Grief, etc.) that we will be studying over
the semester.
Students will want to present a general overview of the Double ABCX model in the paper. Using the ABC-X Model, explain the process by which the family in your chosen film/tv series responds to a stressor/crisis. Be sure to explain, A—the stressor/stress event, B—the family’s resources to respond to the event, C—the family’s perception of the event, and X—the crisis the family experiences as a result of the original stress event. In this draft, you are only expected to have a beginning understanding of the Double ABCX model. For your final CAP, you will need to fully develop the Double ABCX model.
Final Critical Application paper (CAP), students will have an opportunity to write about application of the Double ABCX model to better explain the dynamics depicted in the
movie/tv series.
