For your first assignment, you will write an essay that analyzes explains the rhetorical elements used in an opinion piece of your choice. You should select an opinion piece that examines an issue of importance to the current social or political climate. To find your article, check the “opinion,” “editorial,” “op-ed,” or “guest essay” section of a magazine or newspaper such as the New York Times, Guardian, or Washington Post. Your Rhetorical Analysis should identify article’s intended audience, and evaluate the effectiveness of the article’s rhetoric in terms of how well the article reaches that specific audience. Your Rhetorical Analysis should also explain the goals and limitations of the article’s argument. For example, who falls outside of your article’s intended audience? Would the article appeal to those outside of its intended audience? Who would it fail to reach, and why?
