Overview/Basic Requirements
The type of preparation and delivery is extemporaneous.
The purpose is persuasive action. By definition, a persuasive speech is designed to create, reinforce, or change the audience’s beliefs or action. This action speech will be based on a “thesis of policy” (page 300 in Ch 16) in which you will advocate/persuade the audience to act.
Your topic will identify a specific problem, solution, and call to action (for your audience) that will make the world a better place. Each speech will be organized as Problem-Solution-Action or Monroe’s Motivated Sequence (which is very similar; you will learn this in an upcoming class meeting).
5-8 minutes + 2 minutes Question and Answer Session
Library research required: a minimum of two sources located through the library constitutes Good/Average presentations (“B” or “C” letter grade); strong presentations (“letter grade A”) will include support from 3 or more credible sources (at least two being from the library); articles accessed through the Opposing Viewpoints and/or SIRS Issues Researcher online databases are strongly recommended.
Use one of the two Outline Templates provided for this assignment. Required: typed, full sentence Formal (Preparation) Outline with MLA Works Cited and key word Speaking Outline (type or handwritten) as one page (front only) or up to 8 note cards
Required Visual Aid: One visual aid in the form of a simple PowerPoint (title slide + 1 or 2 content/image slides). No videos.
Grading:
10 points – Topic (Discussion post)
50 points – Formal Outline/MLA formatted Works Cited (dropbox upload)
20 points – Visual Aid (PPT)
10 points – Rehearsal Recording (CONNECT)
100 points Extemporaneous Presentation (Classroom)
