2. Determine which theory (grand, middle, or shared) you will use as the basis for your theory-based practice application paper.
3. Search for scholarly resources about the theory. These may be previous literature reviews, practice applications of the theory including case studies, or use of the theory in research. Of the sources found, you are required to use at least 4-6 theory-relevant ones for your paper. (While you may use your textbook, it does not count toward your number of sources about the theory.)
4. Review the process needed for your application paper. You will:
1. identify and provide brief background of the theory including its disciplinary origin. Secure an image of the model if it exists and use it to better understand the theory. (You will provide the image as an appendix to your paper which is placed following your reference page. If a model does not exist, please generate one to the best of your ability in mapping out the model.)
2. clearly and concisely describe the major concepts or components of the theory as noted in your scholarly review.
3. develop a realistic practice scenario/model case in which you illustrate use of the theory. That is, tell a practice story and use the theoretical concepts in your nursing care. Highlight the major theoretical concepts or components in the practice scenario
4. evaluate the utility of the theory in providing nursing care in your practice scenario. Specifically address (in any order):
Usefulness of the theory and utility of the model/diagram in providing guidance for practice
Generalizability/Scope – is the theory context specific or useful for various practice/education/administration areas? Defend your position about generalizability or scope.
Consider the testability of the theory. Are the concepts theoretically and operationally defined in a meaningful way for practice?
5. Develop implications for
continued theory development (or refinement),
theory-based practice, and
theory-based research.
6. As you conclude your paper, reflect on the experience of applying theory in practice given your new course knowledge. Provide a short narrative on your learning process.
5. Draft sections of your 46-page paper clearly addressing the required steps in the theory-based practice application processes.
6. Draft an introduction that sets the stage for your paper and a summary/conclusion to complete your paper
7. Review the rubric, again, to ensure you are on the right track. Communicate with faculty if additional clarification is needed.
8. Revise your paper to ensure all requirements noted in the grading rubric are met
