This assignment is in two parts. First, using the “Designing Workplace Mentoring Programs” text for Part A, please complete the following:
Part A: From the chapters listed below, please complete the following:
Chapter 2: Planning
Assume you were to develop a mentoring program in your current organization. Then, after reading the chapter material, please respond to the first 2 points under “Lessons Learned” on hard-copy book pages 20, & 21 (i.e., Ensure that the program is integrated into other employee development programs; Develop or modify the mentoring program to fit the organization’s unique culture) by describing the steps you would take to accomplish them. **NOTE: Page numbers may differ if you are using an ebook (Kindle etc) or have a hard copy.
Chapter 5: Training Factors
Identify and describe what area is in greatest need for mentoring within your current organization, or within another organization with which you have experience. Specifically, identify and describe what current organizational factors you feel may have a significant influence on a protege’s success, and also those factors that could influence a mentor relationship. For example, some things you could discuss are issues such as whether there are communication policies or procedures that may foster an insular culture? Do current career opportunities align with the individual’s new skill set?
Chapter 6: Mentoring Structure and Processes
Outline what ‘planned activities’ you feel will enhance the mentoring process, and describe in detail what specific mentoring goals these activities would accomplish. ** Make sure that you associate each goal with an action… avoid simply stating a goal only.
Chapter 7:
Identify at least 2 qualitative and 2 quantitative factors or variables that you feel would represent essential elements of a mentoring program within your organization. These can be related to tasks, and/ or interpersonal skill development or improvement.
Part B Instructions:
Next, think about the effective and ineffective mentor characteristics presented in this article Link (Links to an external site.). Then submit your responses to the following:
Using the concept of ‘Ecology’ (from slide #4 – Learning Constellations) as a reference, discuss what factors within your own organization could enhance and undermine your effectiveness as a mentor, and how you would manage each factor. Please use separate headings for each in your response.
