Make an argument about the text Venus and Adonis depict sexual or political consent in relation to gender and/or race.
Your argument must be built around a close reading of a single passage, explaining how this passage relates to the larger themes of the text. Analyze the selected passage for at least 2-3 pages. You need not address all parts of each prompt. You will need to analyze other quotations in relation to the chosen passage.
A successful paper will have a specific, clear, and contestable thesis. It will have a logical argument structure and clearly present well-analyzed evidence. Stellar papers will also be free of spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors. If you do not turn in a draft of your paper (at least 4 pages long) by May 2 in preparation for the draft workshop, you will lose 1/3 of a letter grade. Late papers will also lose 1/3 of a letter grade per day late. If you do not participate in the peer review, you will lose 1/3 of a letter grade.
You are welcome to use any of the scholarly readings for your paper, but you are not required to do so. Your papers will be evaluated on the strength of the thesis and how well this claim is grounded in evidence. You should use your annotated additions and the Oxford English Dictionary (oed.com) as resources. All papers should be written in Times New Roman with double-spaced, twelve-point font. Margins should not exceed one inch. Do not skip lines between paragraphs. No papers can be rewritten.
