Write brief summaries and a concluding analysis for two reading assignments:
– Harrision, pesticide drift (This is a rather long book chapter, but much of it is descriptive.
While getting a sense of the first part of the text, write your summary on the second part
starting with the section on “Regulatory Culture” (page 107) and “Pesticide Drift Activism” (page
121).
– Anspach & Gorana – Effective advocacy: the psychological mechanisms of environmental issue
framing
1) For each of the two articles provide a brief summary of the main findings/conclusion.
2) What is the supporting data the authors use to develop their argument/conclusion?
3) Assess the validity of the arguments and provide your own concluding remarks of the two
readings. In what ways do the texts relate to each other if at all?
Think about structuring your essay in three parts:
– summary 1
– summary 2
– concluding discussion
Overall length: 750 to 1000 words. Your summaries will likely be longer than your concluding analysis,
but make sure to have something to say in your conclusion besides “I agree with the author.”
Citations: – put full bibliographical references for texts discussed as title. You can copy the
bibliographical reference from the syllabus.
– when you directly cite a text passage from one of the readings, provide page number (Rogers, p. 15).
Be selective and go for big picture: Read the texts first, then try to synthesize your summary analysis and
concluding remarks.
GRADING will be based on:
– effort to identify key arguments and synthesize a concluding section from it,
– organization, clarity of writing and grammar.
– Be concise and precise, avoid vague formulations and repetition. Proof-read before turning in.
– Single-spaced, 1-inch margins, print on both sides of paper (to save paper).
