Research Paper for Physics 230 (Spring 2022)
The paper should be not less than 2500 words i.e. about 5 pages single spaced. The paper can deal with any topic of interest to you, which relates to special and general relativity. (It may be historical.) However, except in exceptional circumstances, the topic should be approved of, in advance, by the instructor. You must give a brief (approx. 5 to 15 minutes) verbal presentation of the paper to the class and/or the instructor without the use of notes to demonstrate that you adequately understand the material of your research paper. The paper should include a bibliography and a title.
Research Paper Dates and Deadlines:
CHOICE OF TOPIC (for final approval by instructor) due by Wednesday, 4/13/22.* Topic needs to be approved by the instructor.
TENTATIVE LIST OF REFERENCES (minimum of 3 references).
Ideally these should be submitted to the instructor after you have
completed much of the research for the paper. Hopefully, at this stage,
you should already have a rough draft of the paper. Of course, you
can add additional references or delete some of these references in the
final version of the paper. Date due: Fri., 4/22/22.*
4. FINAL EXAM: ORAL PRESENTATIONS. Students will be required to arrange with me date/time for their verbal presentations on their research projects. This will constitute mostly the final exam. Ideally they should be held during class time at the end of the month of April and beginning of May. The oral presentation should clearly demonstrate the student’s understanding of the content of his or her research paper.
*Penalty for missing these dates: one letter grade from report deducted each class day that thereafter.
Format for Term Paper (what the paper MUST contain):
Title, Name and Date: Center the project title; put your name and
date on the upper righthand corner above the title.
Acknowledgments: You should give credit to anyone who assisted you or provided encouragement for the project etc. (teacher excluded unless an unusual amount of help was provided)
References: Minimum of 3 written references.
