PERSUASIVE TOPIC:
All California college and university instructors should have mandatory training to teach online classes.
Use research to tell us about the current problem. Teaching has shifted to online and not all instructors were ready. Share examples from research about how this created problems for students, and how it could continue to cause problems in the future.
Use research to tell us about the cause of the problem. Acknowledge that the COVID-19 crisis forced colleges and universities to go online, but also use the research to discuss how specific training for online teaching has not been consistently required.
Use research to give us a solution. What could be done to help ensure California faculty who teach online have the necessary skills? Who should we contact to make a difference? (Hint: research the state Chancellor’s Office for Community Colleges).
A persuasive speech uses three unique main points:
a. Problem- You outline what is currently wrong in the status quo. The topic you have been assigned has a suggested “side” for your persuasive argument. Use research to make an educated outline of what is detrimental with the current system.
b. Cause- You outline how we got to this point…what is the history that caused the problem? What led to use being here, right now? What is the background?
c. Solution- This speech will utilize a call to action for the 3rd point. In this point, you encourage your audience to contact a proper individual/group/organization to initiate a policy change. This actor needs to be able to enforce proposed changes. If it is on the local level (for example, banning the sale of junk food on public school campuses in your local school), you would want to encourage your audience to contact your school Board of Education. If it is on the state level (for example, banning the sale of cigarettes in California), you would want to encourage your audience to contact our local representative to the state legislature to design such a bill. If it is on the national level (for example, forbidding fruit imports from Mexico), you would want to encourage your audience to contact one of our Senators from California to introduce a bill in Congress.
The speech must be 3 pages long between 4-5 minutes long.
You must have a minimum of 7 (seven) sources and sources should be reputable! (.gov, .edu websites)
Each source is cited in speech and BOLDED.
You list the credentials of the source, source’s name, where the source was quoted, and date.
For example:
a. “According to analyst John Markoff in TIME Magazine, September 7, 2018…”
b. “As reported by the National Census Bureau on their homepage, downloaded September 10th, 2018…”
c. “Researchers Gamble and Ross state in their book The Coming Tide, 2018…”
For this speech, you must create a PowerPoint presentation to acompany the speech.
In the copy of the speech you provide me, you will indicate when it is time for me to advance to the next slide.
A minimum of 8 (eight) slides are required, to include the following:
a. Opening Slide w/hook
b. Topic Slide
c. Preview Slide
d. Point 1 Slide (Information) Problem
e. Point 2 Slide (Information) Cause
f. Point 3 Slide (Call to action) Solution
g. Summary Slide
h. Conclusion Slide
Follow the 6 x 6 rule: no more than six lines of text, no more than six words per line PER SLIDE. Provide text highlights but rely on interesting visuals to compliment the speech.
