Choose 5 concepts from the class, and apply each to a unique everyday source. The five sources that students need to apply class material are 1. Magazine/News article (digital or hard copy), 2.Movie/T.V. Show/Online Video, 3. Blog/Advice Column/Nonprofessional Self-Help Advice/Advertisement to Fix an Issue, 4. Something You Found on Social Media (post from someone else, meme, recommendation, be creative!), 5. A Personal Experience from Your Life.
The topics are required to be from separate chapters, and must represent child, adolescent, and adult chapters (e.g., points will be deducted if all 5 topics are from the young childhood chapters). Each topic will be an entry in the media portfolio. The following information should be provided for each source at the top of each individual portfolio entry (a) its source (author/date), (b) relevant concept and chapter number, (c) likely demographics of readership, and (d) link or picture of the event (this is not required for the personal experience).
Paper: Every entry should begin with a summary of the source information. The next section should be a summary of the topic according to your textbook and class notes. The last section should integrate how the concept from class relates/differs/applies to the media example.
Discuss the implications of the application or the implication of how the phenomena impacts(ed) development. Each topic should be a page long. The entire paper should be 7 pages total, with the title as the 1st and references as the 7th page. The paper section is worth 100 points.
Each portfolio entry will be evaluated on five dimensions (each worth 4 points): 1. Relevance and creativity 2. Accuracy of your descriiption. 3. Breadth of coverage (i.e, how well you described, summarized materials and comparisons), 4. How well you critique or discuss the implications, and 5. Grammar/formatting.
All assignments should be typed in word document. Each entry topic is worth 20 points for a total of 100 points for the entire portfolio.
Slides: For this project you will create 5 slides that match with each of the 5 entries within the paper. The 5 slides will align with the 5 topics that you chose. Each slide is worth 10 points. Slides must include at least one relevant visual, a brief descriiption of the section from the book and its connection to your source. Slides can include video links, graphs, and/or photos. Get creative, just make sure the basic information is typed within. The slides portion is worth 50 points.
