Prologue

“Thank you, come again!”
A door shuts in the distance. A few minutes of silence then ensues, periodically broken up by the shuffling of shoes against a wooden floor and the ambient noises of objects being moved around and organized. A woman then emerges from behind a shelf and wipes her glistening forehead.
“Goodness, it’s hot in here. Open that window for me, will you Clara?”
Clara perked up and promptly set down the books she was organizing. She walked over to the window, letting in a cool breeze. She closed her eyes and felt the sensations of both hot and cold. It was pleasantly warm outside, with an occasional gust of wind to cool you down before it got too hot. Clara relished the moment, imagining all the things she could do in this weather when school let out. Her daydream was cut short when she heard a voice yell her name.
“Clara!”
Clara’s body tensed, and she quickly opened her eyes. A boy was standing on the other side of the window, face-to-face with Clara. Two other boys could be seen behind him. One was chuckling.
“Hello, Ben.” Clara sighed. “You scared me half to death, you know that right?”
Ben laughed. “I know. I didn’t think you would jump so hard,” he joked. He peered inside the window and looked around. “Is the shop still open? I wanted to take my friends to visit my favorite antique shop.”
Clara looked at her watch. “We close in about 30 minutes.”
Clara’s mom suddenly moved behind Clara, making her jump again. “I think we can stay open a little longer,” Clara’s mom smiled. “You boys come around to the front.”
Ben grinned. “Thank you, Mrs. Bowen.”
The boys did as they were told. A bell jingled as they came through the door.
“Clara, I would like to introduce you to some new friends I met at the library. This is Kevin.” Ben gestured to Kevin, who smiled and waved sheepishly. “And this is Liraz.”
“Nice to meet you, Clara.” Liraz said.
Clara grinned. “It’s good to meet you both. I hope Ben hasn’t rubbed off too much on you guys.”
Kevin and Liraz laughed softly.
“Well, there is one thing that has rubbed off on us. All of us like old things, and Ben has shown us the best places here to find stuff. So I guess that makes us antique scavengers, just like Ben,” Liraz stated.
“I see. So what brings you guys in today? Can I help in finding anything particular?” Clara questioned.
Kevin finally spoke. “If you don’t mind, there is one thing. I’m trying to find some things I can use for an art project I am working on.”
“Also, can you see if you have anything about unsolved crimes?” Liraz said.
Clara, Ben, Kevin, and Liraz walked off to search for the items requested. Mrs. Bowen stayed behind the counter filing documents. Eventually, the bell jingled again and the door opened.
“Hello! Welcome in,” Mrs. Bowen said warmly.
A man walked in carrying a large cardboard box. “I apologize, but do you mind helping me?”
Mrs. Bowen jumped out of her chair and helped the man carry the box, the pair setting it loudly on the counter. She eyed the box, noticing a variety of both new and old objects. “Were you wanting to donate these items, sir?”
“No ma’am. I saw someone had dropped off this box right outside your store and figured they were meant for you.”
Mrs. Bowen furrowed her brow. “That’s odd. I wonder why they would just leave it outside and not come in.” She started rummaging through the box. “Pretty decent stuff too.”
Upon hearing the objects in the box, Clara, Ben, Kevin, and Liraz walked over to the counter to investigate. The man glanced over at the box to see its contents. He mindlessly scanned the objects near the top of the box before noticing a glimmer of light near the box’s bottom. He picked up an ornate gold necklace with a circular pendant and smiled softly. “Ma’am, do you mind if I take this with me? It looks like a necklace my late wife used to own.”
“Of course,” Mrs. Bowen obliged. “You four dig through that too. Whatever you guys want, on the house.”
Everyone then started rummaging through the box. Soon after starting their hunt, Clara pulled out a broken sword. The blade’s top half was missing entirely, but its wooden handle was perfectly preserved. Everyone stared in awe.
“That is so cool, Clara!” Ben exclaimed. “I wonder where it came from.”
Clara stopped examining the sword and thought for a minute. “I’m not exactly sure,” Clara said, “but I have an idea.”
Clara threw on an old quilt and tied a knot in the front, fashioning a makeshift cape. She then placed a worn lampshade on her head, resembling a helmet. “I am Warrick Payne,” Clara cried, flailing the broken sword. “And I am going to become the best knight who ever lived!”
Clara’s Story
Rosa Mauro
The aromas of hot stew and freshly-baked bread filled the large dining room. Closely seated together were knights of all ranks and levels of prestige, talking and bantering loudly.
Clara tells the story of a young man named Warrick. Warrick dreams of becoming a great knight, but is afraid of making mistakes and being ridiculed; he tends to keep to himself and not converse with others unless prompted.
One day during a feast, one of the other knights calls out Warrick’s shyness and challenges him to a duel to prove he isn’t a coward. Warrick refuses and storms out of the dining hall. Warrick realizes his cowardice and realizes he must prove himself. The next day, rumors spread that a neighboring kingdom is planning to attack. Warrick decides to train vigorously and hone his skills to prepare for the possible strike. For the next 7 days, Warrick trains from dawn to dusk. The day after he concludes his training, 1000 enemy knights are seen standing in the distance. All of the knights are reluctant to attack, but Warrick claims the following day he will single-handedly kill all 1000 knights. Dawn arrives the next day and the knights have not moved, still standing in their original places. Warrick is confused, but still intends on fulfilling his claim. Warrick charges at the knights, but the soldiers stay put. Warrick eventually makes his way to the front lines and realizes the knights are not knights at all, but rather stand-ins made of clay. Warrick slashes through all the clay knights, and the inhabitants of his home kingdom stand in awe. It is later made known the attack was employed by the king to see which knights were truly brave and willing to sacrifice their lives for the kingdom. Warrick was then recognized and given a higher position within the horde of knights.
