Social Responsibility Assignment
This assignment will assess students intercultural competency, knowledge of civic
responsibility, and their ability to engage effectively in regional, national, and global
communities (see attached rubric for detailed assessment categories).
Purpose:
To enable students to relate their coursework to real world problems and increase
student accountability in seeking solutions to these problems.
This assignment will include the following:
1. Chapter reading – Socialization
2. Complete the Multicultural Quiz (handout)
3. Complete the Bogardus social distance survey (handout)
4. Social Responsibility Grading Rubric
5. Handout on civic responsibility
6. Handouts on thomas theorem and kohlberg
Please write in 12 point, times new roman font, double spaced, in complete paragraphs. The assignment should roughly be about 9 paragraphs. 2 paragraphs for question 1, and the other questions require one paragraph.
Each team paper should include your major designation (AA,AAS,AS,AAT) in the top right corner, and each submission should be anonymous meaning no mentions of your name, my name, or the section you are enrolled in. No cover page is required.
1. Socialization:
Identify your families ideas about people who are different from you in terms of;
a. Race/ethnicity
b. Nationality
c. Religion
c. Sexual orientation
d. Developmental disabilities
e. Gender
f. Political identification
2. How are your personal beliefs on the above categories different than the ideas that
you were socialized into by your family? What influenced the changes if any (Peers,
religion, education, government etc.)?
3. Theory of Moral Development CH 3 and handout in term paper items:
Using Kohlbergs Theory of Moral Development, a person who denies same-sex
couples the right to marry based on the fact that the law does not permit it or their
religious book forbids same-sex marriage is at what level or Moral Development?
Explain your answer.
4. Social construction of reality (handout in term paper items): Use either the Thomas Theorem or the Self-fulfilling
prophecy to indicate how an individuals actions can be a benefit or detriment to society.
5. After completing the multicultural quiz (handout), how diverse was your socialization
process? What were your results?
6. After completing the Bogardus survey (handout), what areas of social distance are
indicated? Do you foresee yourself attempting to close-in those social distances or stay
the same?
7. Identify ways in which an individual can work to engage in civic duties? How
important is your cooperation in participating in civic life?
8. In what ways are you personally involved in civic responsibility? Do you foresee that
changing in the future (stay the same, increase, decrease)? Explain your answer.
