It was interesting right away. Out of all the factors that contributed to the anxiety “none was more important than the Buddhist theory of cycles,” mappō. While I am learning various things, I’ve yet to finish all of the various books on Buddhism I own; therefore, I was mostly unaware of mappō. The section, The End of the Heian Period, highlighted the excessive growth of the imperial family, their cutting off and sending away members because the government could not advise adequate support, along with how they still enjoyed higher positions due to their status as members of said family. It also covered warriors and military clans descended from the family and their clashes-mergers. The Kamakura Period portion mentioned something that was important and still is today, figureheads are nearly powerless; puppets for show. There was talk of the Mongols and more before going into the Muromachi Period, Mappō, and the Visual Arts. Some of the information, ok plenty, in various parts was not news to me, but the way everything ties in together was.
