This is the point or argument you want to make about your topic. It usually involves explaining why an historical change occurs, but could be more complicated than that. You choose a significant change over time, and explain its causes using historical facts.
Simple way to think about it…
A becomes B because of C (Where A equals the way it was before the cause, the way it was after the cause (change over time) and C is the event, action or other factors which explain or cause the change.
For example:
Topic: “Ronald Reagan’s Presidency” (you read a biography and several articles about him… You became especially interested in the fact that the Cold War ended in part by his leadership. So you Identify that historical change as your A and B and seek to explain its causes C.
Thesis:
Ronald Reagan’s aggressive foreign policy and increased spending forced the Soviet Union to try to keep up with the US. As a result a Cold War that had raged for over forty years, came to an abrupt end with the collapse of the Soviet Union and its empire beginning in 1989.
Can you see A,B,C?
