This week we are going to discuss the topics in greater detail and the role of professional and volunteer advocates. Based on the readings:
1. In the article “Britney Spears Court Testimony: 8 Most Shocking Revelations” you read about the June 23, 2021, court hearing and Britney’s testimony to the judge about her view of the abuse she endured during her conservatorship and why she wants to sue her family for abuse. What issues is Britney alleging as abusive?
2. Criminal charges of abuse against Jamie Spears would have to come from police, not from Britney. Based on the cases in Florida and Minnesota you read about this week, what do you think the basis for the criminal charge against Jamie Spears could be – financial crime or domestic abuse or both? Using what you have learned about informed consent is Britney just mad, or do you think these are areas that can be explored by the courts for abuse?
3. This is a continuing story. In January 2022, Jamie Spears’ attorney asked the court to have Britney continue to pay for his legal fees amid the probe into his alleged “misconduct” and “self-dealing” while overseeing her conservatorship. The court has not decided on this yet*, but conservative opinion is that the judge will allow it to happen because Jamie Spears’ conduct is only alleged by Britney, and no criminal charges have been filed against him, and part of the conservatorship legally permitted Jamie’s legal fees to be paid for by Britney. Using what you have learned already (not just your emotions), what are your feelings on this?
4. Also in January 2022, Jamie Spears’ attorney asked the judge to file a motion to unseal Britney’s health records next month, saying that the “public has the right to know” more context. Based on what you have learned already about Britney’s rights, does the public have a right to know more context?
