The first stage I recognized in Marji’s attempts to understand justice and forgiveness is when she is forced to realize that she is feeling some level of shame. “The reason for my shame and for the revolution is the same: The difference between social classes” (Satrapi 33). The correlation between her personal feelings and the revolution begins Marjis journey in trying to understand all that is going on around her. “When I went to back to her room she was crying. We were not in the same social class but atleast we were in the same bed” (Satrapi 37). Marjis connection to her maid further complicates her feelings. Due to the different social classes Marji’s maid Mehri is not allowed to love and live freely. This sadness fuels Marji’s desire to understand and seek justice. Another stage to note is when Marjis idea of justice clashes with the concept of forgiveness. “We are going to beat up Ramin! His father has killed a million people!” (Satrapi 45). Marji has witnessed justice in the form of violence, there has been little to no circumstances where the concept of forgiveness is the focus. “Anyway, it is not for you and me to do justice. I’d even say we have to learn to forgive” (Satrapi 46). It’s in this moment that Marji focuses on forgiveness over seeking justice. After learning of the torture many endured in prison, the concept of justice and forgiveness overwhelms Marji. “Don’t cry darling, they will pay for what they have done. But I thought one should forgive.” Marji is left confused seeking comfort in her “friend”, based on context and illustration the audience is left to believe this friend is God.
