Write a paper on Africana Studies & Today – Systemic Racism in Our Education System.For Essay #2, you will select a contemporary issue related to Africana Studies and
academically interrogate its historical origins and lingering impact. You may
examine a significant historical, political, or cultural event. For example, you
could choose to explore voting rights. Your essay would examine the historical
tensions around Black Americans and voting; it would also explore contemporary
challenges around voting rights. You might also choose to explore colorism
(intra-racial bias based on skin tone), respectability politics, or even public

selecting a topic. For Essay #2, your ability to connect your issue/topic to both Africana Studies
methodologies and modern concerns will be critical. Regardless of the topic, the
essay must draw on academic sources and relevant course-related material. Your
essay should also draw on the knowledge acquired in the courses you took/are
taking in the Africana Studies Program.
Essay Criteria
Each essay must be a minimum of ten double-spaced pages, not including works cited
page and notes. Each essay should be double-spaced and use a 12-point font (Times New
Roman, Cambria, or a comparable font is preferred). Finally, the essay must use either
MLA, Chicago, or APA citations for ALL essays.
