SOCIOL 4A03 Ethnic and Racial Tensions
Presentation of Weekly Reading

Students are required to present one of the assigned weekly readings. All readings have to be presented on the week to which they were assigned in the course outline. This will count for 20 percent of your final grade.

Presentations should be a maximum of 15 minutes long. Students should spend no more than 5 minutes maximum summarizing the main ideas of the article. The rest of the time should be spent connecting the article to the broader topic of the week, making critical insights and also commenting on relevance to current events.

Students should include a visual component as part of their presentation. I want to use a PowerPoint. Students are also required to submit 1-2 discussion questions of the week in which they will present. The discussion question(s) should be related to their reading.

Presentations will be marked on the following:
1. Content (clear and presented logically with supported information, accurate explanations of key concepts and theories)
2. Delivery (well-paced, practiced, presenter is not reading off a paper but is comfortable speaking on the topic)
3. Organization (ideas were organized and presented in a coherent, logical progression, introduction was clear and easy to understand, strong conclusion)
4. Presentation aids (easy to read and see, layout is visually pleasing, details are minimized so that main points stand out)
5. Quality of discussion question(s) submitted to instructor

For the powerpoint, the slides can be labeled the following, connection to class topic of the week, critical insights, and relevance to current events. each slide can have bullet points. don’t write big paragraphs on slides.

This week’s theme/class topic is Race/Ethnicity and Sexual Orientation.

to add more info to the slides, write the notes in a word document and I can read that document. just add main points on slides. also please add the 1-2 discussion questions on this word document and the Overview of the article.

Critical Commentary

Students will also be required to submit a written critical commentary on the assigned reading that they present on.

The critical commentary is not a summary of the reading. Students are expected to engage with the reading and make critical insights, connections and/or criticisms of the readings. Students are also encouraged to include a personal response to the issues raised in the reading.

Critical commentaries will be marked on the following:
1. Clearly explains concepts and theories and articulate ideas well
2. Makes convincing arguments
3. Connects the article to the broader topic of the week, other readings for that week, and to current events
4. Evaluates article in an interesting and unique way
5. Writing demonstrates complexity, perceptiveness, originality and depth of thoughts
