American studies assignment

Words: 1176
Pages: 5
Subject: Uncategorized

3.5 pages
The material covered in this exam includes lectures, discussions, and readings from “Unit 1: The Revolution and Establishing the Nation, 1700-1800” and “Unit II: Frontiers & Progressive Ideals at the Turn-of-the-Century, 1865-1924.” You will find the questions for this exam in the next activity in this module, titled “Unit 1 & 2 Exam Questions.” The questions will be visible at 9 am on Monday, March 21 (in others words, you won’t see this page in the module until that time!). You will have until Friday, March 25 at 11:59 pm to complete the exam. Please write your answers in a single, separate document, and then upload it to Canvas.
• Select three of the four exam questions to answer. Write your answers using paragraphs in short essay format.
• Open a new document of your choice (i.e. Word, Google Docs, etc.) and write your answers there. Copy and paste the questions that you’ll be answering into this doc. Type your answer immediately below the question you are answering (that is, after the first question, answer that one. Then go on to the second question, and answer that one, etc.)
• For each prompt, you will write a minimum of 1 page for your response. You can go over 1 page per answer. This means that your total page length will be over three pages since the text of the prompt itself does not count towards your page length!
• Use 1 inch margins all around; double-space; Times New Roman; font size 12. You do not need to use APA or Chicago Style–just write clearly and do not plagiarize (i.e. don’t copy and paste from anything but your own notes! Use your own words and do not pull information from the internet or other outside sources. Only use information/discussions had in this class. I will be using Turnitin, a plagiarism software that will identify text copied from previous student papers or the internet). The content of your answers must include information learned in this class. If quoting from one of our readings, after the quote include in parenthesis the last name of the author and page number if there is one (for example, Calloway, 186).
• When answering each prompt, be sure to answer each part of the question. You will be graded on how well you demonstrate your ability to understand, critique, and analyze materials from Unit 1 and 2. Your answers should be well-organized and grounded in evidence from this class. In grading your exams, the TA’s and I will pay close attention to both substance (do you demonstrate a critical understanding of the material? Do you answer each part of the prompt?) and form (grammar, spelling, organization, and clarity of expression. Be sure to proofread!).
• This exam is open note. You may refer to your own notes!
• Be sure to save your work so you can develop your answers throughout the week. Remember, you can earn up to 5 points per question for grammar, structure, and organization so take time to edit your responses so that you have a polished piece at the end!
• You’ll also see that there is an extra credit question at the end. You can earn up to 3 additional points.
Welcome to the Unit 1 & 2 exam! Here are your questions for the exam. There are four questions; you only need to answer three. Please select the 3 that you wish to answer. Be sure to answer all parts of each question. When answering your questions, incorporate and analyze material from our lectures, readings, and discussion sessions. Remember that there’s an extra credit question at the end!
Before answering the following questions, please carefully read the instructions for this exam (located in this module, titled: “READ instructions for Unit 1 & 2 Exam”). Remember to write your answers in a separate document. Record all of your answers in a single document. Upload your complete answers to Canvas by this Friday, March 25 by 11:59 pm. You’ll find the link to upload your document in this module (titled: “UPLOAD Unit 1 & 2 Exam Here”). Good luck!
UNIT 1 & 2 EXAM QUESTIONS
1. Early in the semester, we learned about the term “anti-conquest.” First, define “anti-conquest.” Then, provide two different examples of “anti-conquest” from Unit 1 lectures, readings, or discussion sessions. In describing each, be as detailed as possible and communicate clearly how your example demonstrates “anti-conquest.” *Be sure that your examples are distinct from one another, are from Unit 1 (i.e. material covered in week 2 to week 5) and do not cover material that you discuss elsewhere in this exam.
2. In Unit 1, we learned about the experiences of people who were kidnapped and enslaved. First, describe how and why it was that the institution of slavery first came to the Southern colonies. Be as detailed as possible in your description and consider how laws were used to carry out the practice of slavery. Second, select one of the following to analyze: 1) advertisement of a runaway slave; 2) Phillis Wheatley’s poem “On Being Brought from Africa;” or 3) the film 12 Years a Slave. Describe the source and its meaning. What does this source reveal to you about slavery? How does this source alter or expand your understanding of slavery?
3. In Unit 2, we learned that even though the institution of slavery ended in 1863, racist practices continued. First, describe minstrelsy. How did minstrel shows create racialized ideas about Black Americans in the 1800s and early 1900s? For the second half of this question, describe the work of one of the following activists that we read for this class: 1) Ida B. Wells; 2) Booker T. Washington; or 3) W.E.B. DuBois. What was this activist’s approach to racial equality? What primary argument did he or she make? In your opinion, why was their approach to racial equality effective or ineffective?
4. In Unit 2, we learned about Manifest Destiny. First, define “Manifest Destiny.” Second, describe how Manifest Destiny supported U.S. imperialist expansion to the Pacific. Third, describe what U.S. imperialism looked like in either the Philippines or Hawai’i. Why did the U.S. government/Americans want this territory? What did Americans do or what practices did they establish in this new territory? Finally, analyze the following cartoon. What ideas did this cartoon convey? What anxieties did it reveal about US expansion to the Pacific? (If you are answering this question, you do not need to cut and paste the cartoon into your answer page. You only need to copy and paste the text of this question.)
5. Extra Credit (3 points): In class, we learned about the Progressive Era in the early 1900s. Who were the Progressives? What did they want and why? Describe in detail one Progressive Era tactic, practice, or legislation. (Answer should be about ½ a page).
