Write a paper on analyzing visual rhetoric as it appears in season one of the Netflix television series Stranger Things in season 1. What is the historical context? What is the genre? How is meaning shaped in the show or episode? What are the character representations? Who is the target audience? What rhetorical appeals are used to provide visual/digital literacy? What are their motivations? Etc. You will use key terms from both our textbook and class discussion to help you make your argument. Paper topics can also include character analysis, an analysis of a particular episode, motifs and metaphors, but your thesis will include a specific topic of your choosing. This is an analysis essay using terms and tools from our reading on visual literacy—not a review. Provide detailed dialogue analysis — remember, you should try to answer your thesis through analysis. Have proper MLA formatting: typed, double-spaced, 12pt. font, margins should not exceed 1 inch (top and bottom as well as side), include a heading, title, and page numbers. Also, follow class instructions: use of direct quotes and quote analysis, include key terms from class, insert a snap shot or photo of your key scene. For this essay, the goal is analysis and not summary. There can be some summary in your introduction just to establish the context of what you’re going to be discussing in the essay but the focus should be an introduction of your topic and conclude with a thesis that connects your topic/theme to a specific aspect of the first season of Stranger Things.
Your first body paragraph should introduce your image and your image should be embedded in the essay (see examples). Then there should be a detailed visual analysis of that image.
The rest of the body paragraphs could include a second image for a comparison or contrast. In should, in general, discuss how your topic plays out across the season.
The conclusion is similar to unit 1 in that it should focus on the topic or theme and how these issues are still relevant today.
**The goal here is to answer your thesis through your visual analysis.**
