Goals for week: Continue to learn about the journalism profession and start to create a game plan for covering an event.
Assigned Tasks:
[1] Reading assignment: How Journalists Write (Links to an external site.)
[2] Writing assignment: Your plan for covering a story
For this exercise, I want you to find an event and tell me how you would cover it if you were a reporter assigned to the story.
STEPS:
Find information about an upcoming event. It could be just about anything: An upcoming fundraiser, a concert, a press conference, building dedication, political speech, etc.
*ALSO: Include a link to where the information about the event can be found online.
Think about the article linked above and others you’ve read over the past few weeks.
Make sure your submission answers all of the following questions:
What makes this event newsworthy?
What would you do ahead of time to prepare to cover the event? Special equipment? Research?
Who would you interview at the event? Why? Remember: You can interview multiple people.
What questions would you ask? List at least five questions.
Is there someone you would need to interview outside of the event? (For example, if you’re covering a political candidate’s event, would you need to interview his/her opponent?)
Who might be interested in the story?
Please note two things:
#1: Details matter! The more details you include the higher your grade will be.
#2: Spelling and grammar matter! You’ll be penalized for sloppy writing.
[3] Submit your assignment (and link to event) in this module.
