Hoarding Disorder
The Psychology of Hoarding Disorder: Approaches for Treatment. Psychiatry Advisor. Attachment theory Hoarding disorders develop because of the inability to interact with others by self-isolation. Instead, they seek the comfort in items they collect, that may have no value. The individual collects excessive items after each disappointing or stressful event. For example, the individual may hold on to the items of a loved one and continue collecting other items that reminds him or her of that person. Over the years, the behavior becomes compulsive and previous reasons to collect are no longer needed, (Burgess AM, et al., 2018). The condition is a serious nearly addicting and the person my deny that a problem exist and resist assistance or treatment. The issue comes to when the living environment becomes inhabitable, unsafe and poses a health risk, (Mathes, B. M., et al., 2020). Additionally, the disorder causes a financial burden and disrupts harmony of the family dynamics. Treatment for this disorder is cognitive behavior therapy, (Mathes, B. M., et al., 2020). The therapist seeks to correct the thought pattern of organizing, redirecting irrational thoughts and encouraging the individual to reflect on the behavior. The condition requires long-term therapy.
