Your essay should consider: the relationship on West African, Caribbean, and European cultures that impacted the development of jazz;
the importance of the military brass band and “collective improvisation” (including a definition of this term in your own words);
the instrumentation of a New Orleans jazz ensemble;
a description (in your own words) of one recording of N.O. jazz discussed in class or the textbook.
