REQUIREMENTS:
Introduction which includes a comparatively unique thesis statement and a plan of development
Supporting body paragraphs that include topic sentences
Conclusion which summarizes the overall focus of your paper and ends with a “clincher”
Approximately 1000 words (approximately 3-4 double-spaced, typed pages)
References to a minimum of three academic, secondary sources (paraphrased or directly quoted) with in-text citations and a reference page
Quotations from the play, with act, scene, line citations (1.2.33-34)
Proper APA formatting including title page, in-text citations, and reference page (include the play as your primary source)
TOPIC:
Compare your own interpretation of Ophelia’s character in the original play with the way she is depicted in the movie Ophelia or in the Kenneth Branagh production of Hamlet. Do you think either of these movies do justice to Ophelia’s character? For instance, do you view her as an innocent victim? A confused woman mistreated and betrayed by all who lover her? A mere pawn in a high-stakes game of political chess? Perhaps you view her as an otherwise intelligent and assertive woman who is bound by the social conventions of the time?
When considering how to approach the essay, first consider your thoughts about Ophelia based on your own interpretation of her character in the original play. Once you have some ideas, do some academic research on Ophelia’s character. You may find that your perspective shifts as you read more, or your research may confirm some of your own ideas. If so, adjust your thesis accordingly. Include material from your sources in your paper, making sure to properly cite and reference them.
