Write a formal paper analyzing a theme that we have been covering in the course. This paper will be submitted in a draft form and then revised and resubmitted. Each draft COUNTS. This paper should be at least six 6 double-spaced pages in length, excluding bibliography. Please see the list of suggested themes from the works we have studied. Select one theme that links AT LEAST TWO WORKS, one of which has to be either Maryse Conde, Mariama Ba, or Camara Laye’s book.
Themes: Immigration, Morality, Sexuality, Patriarchy, Religion, East/West – North/South Relations; Identity and Otherness
Avoid ideas, such as “loneliness” and “boredom.” They are limited themes that will not advance the analysis of a paper. Also, make sure you read the novels because you do not want to limit your options. Keep reading, taking notes and focusing on those short quotes that reflect the ideas of your projected theme.
Research details:
After we have agreed on your theme, the most important part will be your outside sources that you researched. The novels we have been reading will be used as references. In other words, if we take the “Gender” theme, your findings will take center stage and Ben Jelloun’s book for instance will play a secondary role. You will refer to Ben Jelloun’s book as a secondary source. Most of what you will write will be about your findings and not rehashing the stories found in Ben Jelloun’s book.
