Discuss how neighborhoods influence parenting practices, peer deviance, and delinquency and how is it related to high juvenile offending rates?
How do IV: neighborhoods influence DV: juvenile offending rates?
1. Research and passion do not go together- I was happy that many of you are passionate about your topics but we have to be objective when we are being researchers- we can not let our emotions cloud our thinking processes. We have safe guides to make sure that we are not being biased in collecting, analyzing or reporting our data.
2. If you use the variables as key words in EBSCO/JSTOR and find nothing- that does not mean there is nothing written about the phenomenon. Please email me or the librarian and ask for help in rewording/phrasing your questions. When I was doing the multi racial family research, I had to use many different terms (exogamy, endogamy, bi-racial, interracial) to find the studies I needed.
3. If you have abstracts that say “review” or meta-analysis” do not use those- they will not work for these assignments. However, open those and go to the references and see what individual studies they did use and look those studies up- individual studies will work for these assignments.
4. In social sciences, since we are dealing with people and people have free will, we can not “prove” or “disprove” things at a 100% rate- we will always have outliers (when you take Statistics- you will understand this better). That’s why we use confidence levels to show how many times a relationship (correlation) between X and Y will hold- .9 means 90 times out of 100, .8 means 80 times, ect. When we start seeing .6 or .5, then there is little to no support of that relationship (correlation). If you read anything on the web or in popular media bout “proof” or someone “proved” something- be Leary! Researchers use the term support!!
5. Please do not use Google, Wikipedia or any other search engine when doing academic research- unless you are researching how information (and misinformation) is being distributed. Anyone can post anything on the web and make it look and sound legitimate! Use your critical thinking skills and really evaluate and analyze what is posted.
6. Always be open to learning something(s) new. When you do actual research, even if you find that what you thought was “true” turns out to be unsupported, understand that you were still a successful researcher!
Step one: Using the variables from Discussion Question Two as key words, you will locate and copy and paste three abstracts into a WORKSHEET is provided.
Here is the link to the Library orientation: http://nscc.libguides.com/onlineliborientation if you need it.
Abstracts are the summary paragraphs you will see when you look up the key words (variables from your research question) in the databases -EBSCO is recommended.
As you read the abstracts look for “research terms”
Use the handouts, the textbook and the PowerPoints to help you understand what you are looking for
For each abstract make sure you have the authors, title of the article, and journal information- this will help us find them again
You will use these same articles for the Sociological Articles Review
Make sure your name and course information are on the worksheet.
For assistance: Contact the embedded librarian (Librarian, NSCC in the class list)
Step two: For one of the abstracts you list- open the article, read it carefully and complete the WORKSHEET provided below.
Each of the items on the worksheet will be in a well-written research article.
Here is a website that helps you identify the parts of the studies: https://www.lib.ncsu.edu/tutorials/scholarly-articles/
Use the handouts that are provided which explain the difference between popular and scholarly articles as well as how to evaluate scholarly sources
Review of Methods handout and Chapter Two PowerPoint.
Use the E-library instructions I have provided.
DOWN BELOW IS THE REST OF THE DOCUMENTS THAT WERE FILLED OUT AND complete for assigment 1.
Read the 3 research studies that you found for Assignment 1. As you read, highlight the and label the different parts of research
Step two: Complete the WORKSHEET provided below.
Read the feedback on the Checking the Articles Assignment (Assignment 1)
Correct what you did wrong on the first study from Assignment 1 in section A
Complete sections B and C
Answer the research question you created in discussion question 2 (Chapter 2 Research) in part D
Give clear explanations on 5 things you learned by doing this assignment.
down below is the docuemnt that has to be filled out and complete.
