Similarities
– There is summer, autumn, winter, spring
– Indicators for summer include

TIWI ISLANDS –NORTHERN
TERRITORY–AUSTRALIA
From mid-august- November is, Tyiari {The season of hot weather and
high humidity}

Water beds and creeks dry up
o
Thunderstorms build but there
is little rain
o
Food picking happens in the
mangroves and jungle patches to stop hot feet

Worms are easy to find and
sweet

From December- February is Jamutakari {The wet season}
o
Possums are spotted all over
the place
o
It’s the ‘season of the
clapsticks’
o
Rain falls almost every day
filling up the creeks and river beds
o
There is a lot of lightning

march-mid august is Kumunupunari {The dry season for fire and smoke}
o
Many trees flower and bear
fruit
o
Dry grass is burnt
o
The wind can cause flaky skin

Near the end it can get very
cold

Similarities:

In the Kaurna calendar and the Tiwi
islands calendar share the similarity of a hot season/dry season

They both have a cold season/month
o
They both use animal sounds,
and other animal indicators to tell it’s a season change
o
They both understand that
plants will change depending on the season
Differences:

The Tiwi island calendar has 3
seasons and the Kaurna calendar has 4
o
In the Tiwi calendar the
Kumunupunari goes for around 6 months with the last few weeks or so is cold
whereas the Kaurna calendar gave that its own month.

In Tiwi wet season occurs at
the same time as Kaurna’s summer
Part 3:

– Modern

The modern crop calendar, grows
a variety of plants and crops from cotton-wheat
o
They plant around the year
o
They have specific harvesting
times that they must stick to
o
Its never wild
– Aboriginal

They don’t really plant
o
They have specific harvesting times
to stick to

It’s mainly wild

Gurti otherwise known as a
