While understanding individual development theory is crucial as you prepare to be a counselor, equally important is understanding family development theories. In this week’s assignment you will analyze several factors that contribute to family development.
Duvall (1957) identified 8 stages of family development. Later this was revised to be 6 basic stages. Although the traditional definition of “family” has changed in recent years, the stages are still applicable.
Write a 1,400- to 1,750-word paper in which you identify and apply concepts of Duvall’s family development stages to your own family.
Summarize each of the 6 stages of the family life cycle. Use one paragraph for each stage.
Analyze your experience within your family in each of the 6 stages. You may use your family of origin or your current family for this assignment.
Note: Consult your instructor if you have difficulty analyzing your family experiences within this model.
Respond to the following guiding questions in your analysis, using the underlined topics below as headings in your paper:

The Married Couple
Consider whether or not you or your parents took time to fully embrace independence prior to becoming coupled. Did you or your parents achieve independence before coupling? If so, describe the transition from being independent to being interdependent. Did you or your parents go directly to coupling from dependence on your/their family? If so, do you believe that you/they missed a significant stage in life? Why or why not?
Childbearing
Consider either your own development as an infant or the development of your own children through the infancy stage. What was your (or your children’s) experience going through this stage? Did having an infant change the dynamic within the family? Why or why not?
Preschool-Aged Children
Describe any critical preschool milestones that had an impact on the family. How did the family dynamic change as the child(ren) reached these milestones?
School-Aged Children
As the children developed to elementary age, how did the dynamic in the family change? What was the focus of the family?
Teenage Children
What changes occurred within the family as the child(ren) entered adolescence? What was communication like in the family and how did each family member adapt to changing roles and rules?
Launching the Children
As you launched from your family of origin, or if you have launched your own children, what was that transition into the next stage like?
Conclude with a summary of what you have learned from completing this assignment. For example: In what ways have the transitions between stages been successful? What are some of the challenges or obstacles that have made transitions between the stages more difficult?
Cite 3-5 scholarly sources in addition to your textbook.
