Structure:
Introduction Paragraph:
Introduce the topic in a way that shows your interest in the topic (2 to 3 sentences).
State your thesis: What will you be proving or showing in this essay? Your thesis must answer the question. (1 to 2 sentences).
Two Body Paragraphs: “They say, I say” Format
Paragraph One
Present one of your pieces of research (this is the topic for the whole paragraph).
Use the “they say / I say” approach:
Provide one or two quotes from your research source, integrated with a lead-in and in-text citation. Then, describe in your own words what the quote is saying. This is what “they” (the experts) say.
Respond to each quote with your own perspective. You can answer, for instance: Why does this demonstrate the importance of this issue? Or, how does this support your perspective? Or, do you actually disagree with this quote? This is the “I say” part.
Paragraph Two
Present the other piece of research (this is the topic for the whole paragraph).
Use the “they say / I say” approach:

Begin the paragraph addressing an opposing view on the topic: introduce the opposing idea, acknowledge its validity, refute it & reinforce your position (2-3 sentences)
Close by restating the thesis with a short summary of your analysis (2 sentences)
Language:
The genre of your writing is: Academic. Use predominantly formal written English with a neutral tone.
You are welcome to use the personal pronoun “I” in your essay, but please avoid using general pronouns (e.g. you, we, our) to avoid over-generalizations.
Quotes:
You must use a minimum of two direct quotes as part of your analysis. Quotes must use APA formatting.
