Question: What is John Mills belief on seeking happiness?
To understand Mills outlook on seeking happiness you first need to understand what defines one’s morals. Mills is quoted in his What utilitarianism is page 8 “the rules and precepts for human conduct such that: the observance of them would provide the best possible guarantee of an existence such as has been described—for all mankind and, so far as the nature of things allows, for the whole sentient creation.” This is vague in it’s nature as morality may be different from person to person. This leads to if people deserve to be happy which is where Mills opinion I find to be interesting. He states that happiness is attainable by all but may not necessarily be grabbed by all. He expresses admiration for those who chose to abandon their own happiness in favor of dedication to the happiness of the world as a whole. This is an opinion on the matte that I share. It is your right to seek happiness for yourself or others, however, I do not think that happiness should overrule that of someone else’s.
