As a teacher, it is important that you understand the basic principles of RTI. It essentially is a multi tier approach to the early identification of students with learning, social, or behavioral needs. This is a general education initiative that begins with schools having procedures in place to identify students who are struggling with the universal or school wide curricula and/or behavioral expectations (tier 1/universal level) and providing them with research based interventions then assessing their progress over time. If they respond to the interventions at tier 1, 2 and/or 3, that is most excellent. If they don’t, then the RTI team reviews the progress or lack there of, and reassesses the need to try other strategies. At some point, the RTI team may determine the child is not making adequate progress at tier 2 or 3, based upon the data reviewed, and pitch the child’s case to an Admissions and Release Committee (ARC) to determine if the child may be dealing with a disability that is interfering with educational progress.
Given this brief explanation, you can see how it is important that you understand the RTI, know how it is implemented at your school, and the need for you to develop some expertise in research based interventions. RTI goes beyond giving students a little help; rather it is a systematic method of targeted intensive instruction n areas that are identified as lacking with periodic, strategic assessment.
Here are some examples of research based interventions for a variety of challenges. This list is by NO means exhaustive, but I wanted to give you a sense of what kinds of strategic intervention might be used in tier 2 and 3 when students are receiving RTI interventions.
Reading Comprehension: Paired reading, Echo Reading, QAR guides, instruction in context cues, computer assisted programs.
Basic Reading: Phonemic awareness training, Time Delay, Repeated reading, picture prompts, rhyming words.
Math Calculation and Reasoning: Touch five, word problem strategies, next dollar strategy, use of visual/picture cueing procedures, computer assisted programs.
Written Expression: Tracing, guided practice, tactile kinesthetic tracing, error monitoring, computer assessment instruction.
Task Completion: Differential reinforcement (DRO, DRL, DRI), Cueing, self monitoring and other behavioral modification procedures.
Behavioral dysregulation: Check and Connect, behavioral coaching, and other behavioral modification interventions.
Tip regarding this week’s assignment:
For the RTI assignment, you will need to locate a peer reviewed research article on the topic of RTI that is current (must be dated 2010 or more recent). Basically it is an article from a scholarly journal that has been reviewed by experts in the field before the article is published. This insures the quality of the work and suggests that it has met the standards of scientific research, thus one might be able to draw reasonable conclusions from it. The library’s article data bases will allow you to limit your search to ‘peer reviewed’ articles. This excludes chapters from books, magazines, newsletters, etc.
