The Pygmalion effect, also known as a self-fulfilling prophecy, is nothing more than the ability of a person’s thoughts to be able to interfere with their own behavior or that of others.This effect has its origin in the 20th century, when the expression was coined by the sociologist Robert K. Merton, who formalized its structure and its consequences. Years later, Rosenthal and Jacobson studied the Pygmalion effect from the perspective of self-fulfilling prophecy theory. We understand this theory as one of the factors that influence the motivation of students in the classroom. At that point they realize that teachers’ expectations and predictions about how students will behave somehow determine precisely the behaviors that teachers expect.The name of this effect begins in Greek mythology, Pygmalion was the prince of Cyprus, but he had no luck in love, so he decided to sculpt a doll with the ideal characteristics. Then he begged Venus to give life to that statue, and she granted him, when this happened, they got married and she turned out to be the ideal woman for him. This psychological phenomenon explains how, through the expectations and ideas that a person may have in their mind, they come to influence others.There are two types of self-fulfilling prophecies, those self-imposed and those imposed by one person on another. Self-imposed prophecies occur when your own expectations influence your behavior and imposed prophecy is when one person imposes himself on another, so that one person’s expectations govern another’s actions. Both have positive or negative effects on people because they can help them achieve and fulfill their goals, as well as make them fail.The Pygmalion effect or self-fulfilling prophecy can influence a person for better or worse, and depending on it, it will influence the person’s behavior and achievements in society.
This effect is reflected in schools, since it is based on the expectations that teachers place on their students. Studies show that if you take a group of students at random and let the teachers know that they are the smartest in the class, because of the high hopes that are placed on them, it will help make them the smartest. and over time the most advantaged in the classroom (Rosenthal and Jacobsen). It has been shown that children who belong to secondary schools where they are given classes to prepare them to go to university, are more likely to attend it, unlike children who do not receive these classes, because in their minds it is not visualized this idea, for your future.
The Pygmalion Effect can be seen in business or in the workplace, since through the perspectives of the bosses on their workers, it will help the performance of the workers in a company, and thus be able to achieve their objectives. This effect is also related to the attention that a boss gives to his employee, since he must always try not to overload the worker with long hours of work and too much work, because this would cause stress and could affect the result you want to achieve.
The Pygmalion effect is also reflected in society in a very simple way, the people around us will behave according to the influence that we ourselves have on them, be it our boss, co-worker, friends and family. All of them will be with us and will achieve what we are capable of visualizing. A very simple example, if all the time we think that our boss is going to be happy with our work, because we come to believe that we are the best, this is going to happen, because we are able to visualize it and that desire is what takes us through the road to success.
