The Baroque in Italy and Spain

The Baroque period is one of the more fascinating and exciting periods in Western art, particularly in Italy. For so long, the Church had determined the purpose of much art, as well as its appearance, and it will continue to do so more than ever after the Counter-Reformation. In 1620 the Council of Trent will meet to determine ways to bring the people back to the Church, in a word, to make fallen Catholics come back into the fold. After the Reformation we see a rise in painting of interiors, personal portraiture, even still-lifes as everything created does not have to be a saint or a sinner. The theatricality of the Baroque will counteract this in every way as the ever calm and serene Mary depicted in the Renaissance will now become more human than angelic, as she will visibly react to and mourn the loss of her son. There was an old joke in the art history world: How do you tell a Renaissance Madonna from a Baroque one? The is: Simple, the Renaissance one will have hands folded in prayer and be looking down, while the Baroque will have her hands raised along with her eyes to the heavens asking why? It is an over-simplification for sure, but there is much truth in this. The Renaissance will see the angelic Mary always smiling and in prayer or playing lovingly with her son, while in the Baroque more often than not we see Mary mourning his loss. Movement becomes essential in both architecture and sculpture and the stoic and staid will become alive thanks to hand of the master Gianlorenzo Bernini, whose first love is theater, and who makes that obvious in all he creates. Every straight line will become a curved one, and the viewer will be constantly enchanted by the unexpected. Passion reigns supreme over calm and it shows in Baroque art and music.
