Weekly Research Assignment:
Each week :
-pick one contemporary piece of ceramic work (this can be sculptural or
functional) from the website artaxis.org. And
– pick one historic piece of pottery that you can search for on the internet using the suggestions below as a starting point. Make sure the piece is truly an ancient or historic piece of ceramics, rather than something that made recently even if it was inspired by history . Try to choose work from different cultures and time periods each week.
For both pieces, choose work that you think has an integrated decoration and shape; and discuss why/how you think the decoration helps to call attention to the shape. For example: does the color, drawing, texture, pattern etc…. that was applied to the surface of the form help to move your eye around the piece, or call your attention to the form in some way? Try to discuss specific elements of decoration that call your attention to the shape of the piece you are writing about. Focus your comments on the balance between the shape of the piece and the decoration that was applied to that shape. (how do they work together to create a strong visual experience?)
Include :
-an image of both pieces you are discussing each week
-the name of the artist, or historical time period/ culture of the work -your name
-and the assignment # for each week you hand in your h.w. (week#1, #2…)
