Research Synthesis Awakened Steps:
Task: If you were unable to participate in the learning conversation on Monday 3/14 you will need to write an informative text that provides a well-evidenced understanding of the essential questions listed below.
To what extent has your group been empowered and marginalized in American society?
Format for your essay:
1+ page typed essay, single space, using the third person (very limited “I” voice)
Must include all five sources from your research template.
Include citations/references to sources by putting the source letter at the end of the sentence.
Ex: Boxing was a popular amateur competitive sport that existed in Ancient Greece and was even part of the first Olympics (C).
Your synthesis should be organized with an introduction and a minimum of three body paragraphs.
Introduction: Your introduction should provide a detailed overview of WHO makes up your group. Your final sentence should be your claim that answers the essential question To what extent has your group been empowered and marginalized in American Society? UNDERLINE your claim.
Body Paragraphs: Use the below focus questions as a way to organize your three body paragraphs
What are the major movements, time period’s, events that denied rights and extended rights to your assigned group?
What are the significant pieces of legislation/court cases that served that extended rights to your assigned groups?
How is your group viewed by society today? Try to focus your research as local as you can find. For this you want to look up contemporary (recent) events/news coverage/representation in politics to best capture this response.
What are key (common) themes in the experiences shared by those who identify as part of your group?
Begin each body paragraph with a topic sentence. Each topic sentence is a claim (argument) about the topic you are writing about (see above for organization) and it relates to your central claim (what you underlined in your introduction). A different way you can think about this is to write a sentence that describes what you understood to be the bottom-line takeaway about that topic. “African Americans faced both a denial and advancements of rights through events during ….”
After your claim, provide at least 2-3 specific and detailed evidence to prove/support your claim.
After you have pulled a specific piece of evidence (direct quote or a paraphrased section) INCLUDE YOUR OWN ANALYSIS.
Provide appropriate citation (source letter) after each piece of evidence.
Conclusion: 2-3 sentences to wrap up synthesis.
