Why a Research Project? We solve problems every day, but some problems require a strategic approach: We have
to narrow down the challenge, study potential solutions, identify the one that best suits our needs and abilities,
prepare tools and materials, sequence necessary steps, start executing our plan, adjust its trajectory according to
unforeseen obstacles and additional requirements, finish the task, and clean up our mess.
Result: We have created
something new and acquired a new skill. Next time, we will be more confident addressing a similar challenge. It’s the
same with scientific research. Not only will we discover something new, but we will also acquire new research skills,
attune our minds to systematic inquiry, map out uncharted cultural terrain, and grow our confidence.
Practicing
systematic research is a core aim of this project. So, every step matters.
You Explore and Outline Your Topic: You can explore any artist, artistic current, genre, epoch, or creative challenge
as long as your research relates to Western art and our analytical perspectives.
Exploring and narrowing down your
topic is an integral part of your project. It takes time. Do not shortcut this step. Instead of a conventional research
paper, you will submit an Annotated Image Collection. This format emphasizes actual research and visual analysis
instead of polished formal writing.
