How does talking about what might result from the utopian ideas she considers impact her ultimate decision?
Reader Response Diary 3 | Entry 1
Reader Response Diary (RRD) will be assigned almost every week. Do the assigned reading and the video/audio for each week before completing the entry for that week. Use all module content to answer each week’s entry.
This submission will consist of one week worth of entries. You must submit this as a single word document (docx. doc.).
Consult the rubric as you are building and before submitting to ensure you have met all criteria for full credit.
review below for explicit directions for Reader Response Diary 3.
DIRECTIONS RRD3 | ENTRY 1, PART 1
You’ve read the short story by Octavia Butler “The Book of Martha.”
As you begin to consider the challenge Martha was faced, answer the following questions to build your critical response.
How is a utopia described or depicted in this story?
How does the main character decide to make a near-utopia? What elements influence her decision-making process?
What does Martha learn from reflecting on her past experiences?
How does talking about what might result from the utopian ideas she considers impact her ultimate decision?
DIRECTIONS RRD3 | ENTRY 1, PART 2
You read Octavia Butler’s “The Book of Martha” and considered utopian ideas and experiences for Part 1. Now, you are asked to reflect on the story and your discussion questions to write your own ending to the story. Imagine that you have the same responsibility as Martha, what would you do differently? What big decision would you make?
You can choose to begin your story at any part of Butler’s story. We don’t need the beginning but start wherever you feel will make the most creative and powerful impact! Think about a technique, technology, or idea that will give rise to a new, utopian society. The story only needs to be 1 page but remember quality over quantity. The story should be long enough to include the following elements:
The technique, technology, or idea that you have chosen to give rise to your new utopian society
The discussion of potential outcomes (positive and negative) to showcase your thought process (just as Martha did)
Description of what your utopia would look like
The utopian decision you are making with logic and explanation
